The class of 1979 will hold it's 30th class reunion weekend October 9-11, 2009. There will be a number of events throughout the weekend. The "Main Event" will be held on Saturday, October 10th @ 6:30pm at the Polish Club in Montville. This will include a Cocktail hour and Buffet dinner. The cost is $40 per person. Planning a reunion
Below are some tips to help you plan your next reunion... If you have any ideas to add, please email!
Notify MHS, MHSAA, and Newspapers
- Contact MHS Office, Mrs. Marion Lunden at 860-848-9208. Let her know that there is a committee formed for your class reunion. Provide her with your Class Year and the contact number. If she receives any calls, she will provide them with your information. Additionally, determine from her if there are any funds left from your High School years. If so, this money can be used for deposits on the facility, food, DJ, etc. As for mailings, the High School Office may be able to mail your notices, flyers, invitiations for free - please check.
- Contact MHSAA Web Administrator with details of your Class to be posted in the Reunions section. This includes: Contact Person, Address/Phone/Email, Details of event OR if you would simply like class members update you with their recent contact information. MHSAA will also provide an the Alumni contact info for your class and provide updates to MHSAA as plans progress. Note: MHSAA does not sell this information.
- Contact The Day newspaper and place a free ad:
Items for Neighbors - calendar listings; announcements of club meetings and news; individuals' accomplishments and honors; class reunions; school and scouting news - should be emailed to: neighbors@theday.com, sent via fax (860-442-5588) or mailed to Neighbors, c/o The Day, P.O. Box 1231, New London, CT 06320. No listings will be accepted by phone. Items should be sent two weeks before the desired publication date. To confirm that material sent by fax or mail has been received, call 860-701-4378.
- Contact The Norwich Bulletin newspaper and place a free ad:
There is a community calendar, called the Bulletin Board, where ads may be placed for free. Reunions are usually posted on Saturdays and Sundays. Contact the Newsroom Clerk at 860-425-4200 or email at news@norwichbulletin.com If sending email, it would helpful to indicate in Subject: "Request to list on Bulletin Board - Reunion Event".
- Contact Montville's Channel 20 by emailing channel20@montvilleschools.org, to place a free ad. You must provide them with: Your Name, Notice Start Date, Notice End Date, and the Notice itself. You may simply provide the text, however you can also provide them with a Powerpoint file that contains your notice. This way, you will get exactly what you want printed and it is also easier for them to list your notice.
Find Your Classmates And Gather Help
- Enter their name in Internet Search Engines like google.com
- Check local phone books, 411.com, infospace.com, or other directory sites for locating names and possible addresses.
- Check reunion-type websites: classmates.com and reunions.com. For a fee you can join and update that website. You'll be able to email classmates from your class through this site and post messages in their bulletin boards or discussions.
- Send a preliminary mailer/postcard out with request for updated addresses, email addresses, and phone numbers and to notify them of the date that the committee has chosen. This is also a good chance to ask for volunteers and people to work the night of the reunion.
Determine Ticket Pricing
- Ticket pricing can be difficult. You might need to establish a buffer for the next reunion's deposits if there is no capital at the present time. You can do this by adding $1 to each ticket for the next reunion's start-up costs. A 50/50 raffle is always a big hit and an easy money maker.
Date, Time, Location Considerations
- Time, date, and place are chosen like a wedding. Mil out invitations with an RSVP cut-off date. If someone cannot attend, have them drop a note and let everyone know what is going on so that this can be displayed on the night of the reunion. See if restaurant will add a minimum of 5 to your total number of guests as there will be late-comers. You may consider adding a late fee to tickets after your RSVP cut-off date.
Activities and Event Ideas
- Awards can be given for the longest married, most kids, farthest traveled, etc. This information can be gathered by having asking these questions in the mailings/invitations. Responses can be gathered and awards established so that they may be presented for the reunion.
- Consider photocopying your class's pictures from the yearbook. As people check-in, allow them to pick a photo from a pile of upside-down pictures with a challenge to find that person by the end of the night.
- Provide nametags with First, Last and Maiden Names (if applicable) on them as they arrive at the door.
- Request classmates to provide copies of past or present photos. The photos with date/caption can be displayed on presentation boards at the reunion.
- Invite Class Advisors and Administration to the reunion - you will be surprised who shows up!
- Provide 1 or 2 copies of the yearbook so that classmates may browse through them during the reunion.
- If you have a portable TV/VCR available, consider playing a tape of your Class's Graduation or Senior Night events throughout the evening. The TV's volume doesn't have to be loud, just provide some background visual.
